What You’ll Do:
SPS is seeking one to two (per school) experienced, dedicated educators to serve as mentors. Each mentor will be assigned up to five new teachers. Mentors will work with first-year teachers to support the development of welcoming classrooms that provide access to instruction for all learners. Mentors will commit to providing observation and feedback once a month that is focused on one of the four instructional focus areas. Mentors will also support new teachers in tracking this work on a district form. The stipend of $ 1,000 will include compensation for use of prep time to conduct observations and feedback.
Role Responsibilities:
- Facilitate new teacher PLC.
- Maintain professional respect and confidentiality around the mentoring relationship.
- Attend and participate fully in all professional development/training and mentor facilitator meetings provided by the Salem Public Schools: 9/10, 10/8, and 11/19, 3:45-5:15.
- Offer support through active listening and by sharing experiences.
- Be willing to be observed by a beginning teacher and be willing to observe a beginning teacher.
- Model researched-based instructional techniques.
- Provide immediate and constructive feedback.
- Help beginning teachers to develop the practice of self-reflection.
- Support beginning teachers with reviewing student data.
- Act as a positive role model in all aspects of the teaching profession.
- Document ongoing mentoring collaboration per signed mentor/mentee logs.

Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree preferred
- Massachusetts educator certification
- SEI endorsement
- Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
