Summary

School Bus Driver transport students to and from school in a safe manner in accordance with the Transportation Department and the Salem Public Schools policies.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for inspecting vehicle for safety and completely log prior to use
• Observes students entering and existing school bus safely
• Communicates pick-up and drop-off times to parents
• Assists monitor if necessary in securing young or physically challenged students’ seatbelts and wheelchairs
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as transportation plan, safety rules and procedure manuals
• Must adhere to assigned route while maintaining a strict timeline
• Communicates with parents and school staff in a professional and courteous manner
• Maintains discipline of students on school bus (i.e keeps students from leaning out windows, staying in seat, respecting other riders, and using appropriate language)
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
• Perform other related tasks as assume other related responsibilities as may be assigned by the Transportation Office

Qualifications

• Must possess CDL Driver’s License Class B
• School Bus Driver’s Certificate Required 
• Must possess necessary knowledge to be able to identify vehicle components to complete safety inspections
• Must be able to complete safety and driving instruction per year as required by law
