What You’ll Do:

Bentley Academy Innovation School in partnership with the Multilingual Learner Department of Salem Public Schools launched a two-way immersion Spanish-English dual language program with two kindergarten classrooms during the 2020-2021 school year. The two-way immersion program will grow by one grade level each year. The school will add two 4th grade classrooms and a preschool classroom for school year 24–25. The goals of the program are for all students, regardless of language background, to become bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English, to achieve academically in all subjects at high levels, and to exhibit the skills and disposition of sociocultural competence.

 

Dual Language Elementary Teachers are responsible for planning and teaching interdisciplinary units of Math, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish Language Arts in Spanish for English Learners and Spanish Learners together.  Working closely with partner Dual Language teachers and the English language instruction teacher(s), the educator in this position will be highly collaborative, thoughtful, and creative with a focus on instructional excellence and equity for all students.  She/he will also support the growth of the program by participating in district and school professional development planning and strategy sessions, engaging in family and community outreach to support the program’s goals and development, and acting as a steward of dual language.

 

In SY 2024-25, the program will include a PreK classroom and two classrooms of each grade from Kindergarten through Grade 4. We seek English & Spanish teachers who are interested in current or future openings in the following classrooms: 

 

PK - 1 classroom - 90% Spanish Instruction

K - 2 classrooms - 90% Spanish Instruction

1 - 2 classrooms - 80% Spanish Instruction

2 - 2 bilingual classrooms - 70% Spanish/30% English Instruction

3 - 1 classroom - 100% Spanish Instruction/1 classroom - 100% English Instruction

4 - 1 classroom - 100% Spanish Instruction/1 classroom - 100% English Instruction

 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Teaches literacy, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science in Spanish and/or English depending on grade-level and language allocation. 
  • All teachers use strategies conducive to native speakers and language learners of the target language such as sheltered instruction, strategic pairing, and cooperative learning. 
  • Develops the curriculum, unit, and lesson plans for the grade-level Dual Language program in partnership with English language instruction teacher(s) and the Bentley and Multilingual Learner team.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Provides structure in the classroom by promoting a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning for students of all backgrounds and language proficiency levels, using SEL and culturally responsive strategies.
  • Prepares teaching materials and related reports including ongoing data analyses for the purpose of improving instruction, implementing lesson plans, and documenting student progress.
  • Instructs and provides assistance for student learning, individually or in groups, designing lessons that both present and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Assesses students in language and content proficiency, collects data, adjusts instruction accordingly
  • Communicates regularly and proactively with all families about student progress, concerns, and employs a culturally proficient and respectful approach in all communication
  • Serves on district Dual Language Task Force and attends professional development sessions to contribute to development and sustainability of dual language program
  • Works under the general supervision of the ML Director, building principal and other building administrators at Bentley Academy Innovation School

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree Required; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Native Literacy or Highly Advanced Proficiency in Spanish Required
  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Elementary 1-6 or Early Childhood (K-2)
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (Required within 1-year of start date for teachers of English)
  • Bilingual Educator Endorsement or willingness to obtain Bilingual Educator endorsement as required by MA state law (for teachers of Spanish)
  • Dual Certification (content area) a plus
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience and working in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred.
  • Proven track record of raising student achievement scores in an urban/turnaround environment highly desired.
  • Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication suites (Remind preferred), Google G-Suite Apps, etc.) desirable.
  • Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Licensure from other countries considered

Work Year: Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185 day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days. Please visit www.salemk12.org to view the 2024-25 district and/or school calendar.

 

Salary: Teacher salaries in the Salem Public Schools are determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement. Salary information can be found in Appendix A.
